What is the difference between a chromosome and a chromatid?

I have heard 2 explanations. I have heard that a chromosome is one half of the x formed during metaphase when the chromosomes line up, and that a chromatid is one half of an x making up the chromosome, and I have also heard that the chromatid is one half of the x formed in metaphase of mitosis. HELP! I'm confused!
