If I am on a paid on a payroll, How am i paid??

Lets say I get paid $16 an hour on companys payroll. Does that mean the company deduct taxes and I get paid $16? or does that mean I still have to pay taxes after $16 an hour so that I would earn less? How does payroll work? for most companies? how do they do taxes?
